Assistant Teacher - Type I


As an Assistant Teacher in our nonpublic day school serving Special Education students in grades 6-12 with emotional and behavioral disorders who have not been successful in a public school setting, you will assist the Teacher in providing services specified in the IEPs of assigned students; and provide leadership and guidance to the students in a supportive atmosphere. You'll make a positive and effective impact by implementing accommodations and modifications to county and state curriculum to meet the diverse needs of each learner. You'll also participate as an active member of the Treatment Team to develop an overall strategy to help each child succeed in reaching their full potential .

  • Maintains a safe learning environment for students within the scope of the Arrow Center for Education's administrative policies and procedures.
  • Supervises and manages student behavior in the classroom, school and school-sponsored functions.
  • Provides a consistent and reliable supportive presence in the classroom.
  • Assists in the direct group and individual instruction to students.
  • Stimulates interest and cooperation in individual and group activities.
  • Provides a learning environment that is stimulating and motivating to students who generally have not adjusted well to school.
  • Assists in the timely completion of all necessary paperwork to accurately record student progress.  This is to include daily attendance records, grades and behavioral logs.
  • Participates as an active member of the Treatment Team.  Communicates all appropriate information within and without the classroom orally and in writing.
  • Assists in the development and maintenance of a positive school culture.
  • Maintains proper rules, safety and security of students, providing crisis intervention when necessary.
  • Informs the Teacher and/or Behavior Specialist of all relevant situations.
  • Attends trainings and meetings as required.
  • Shares/transmits the mission and vision of Arrow Child & Family Ministries to staff and to students and families served.
  • May be required to drive ACFM vehicles, be insurable with our auto insurance provider, and complete Arrow's vehicle training.
  • Perform all duties within contract, state and federal regulations, Arrow policy, COA, and NCASES standards.

Education, Licensure and/or Experience
High School diploma or GED and at least one (1) year experience working with children and families preferably in a school setting.

Language Skills
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with superiors, colleagues, and individuals inside and outside the ministry.

Mathematical Skills
Ability to apply basic mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical solutions.

Reasoning Ability
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one or two-step instructions. Ability to deal with standardized situations with occasional variables.

Other Requirements

  • Valid driver's license
  • Proof of current Auto Registration, Inspection and Insurance
  • Driving Record (three years) from the state in which the driver's license is valid
  • Must submit to and pass a pre-employment drug test.
  • Must submit to and pass random drug tests during employment. 
  • Must successfully pass all background screens as required by the state.
  • Must be 21 years of age or older.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may have occasional contact with cleaning solvents, aromatics and nuisance dusts. Some locations may require PCM (Professional Crisis Management) Training.
